Vertical Closed Loop Installation

Vertical Closed Loop Systems involve a series of holes drilled from depths of 100’-300’ spaced 15’-20’ apart. The diameters of the holes are 4”-6”. Most residential applications in our service area use 1” HDPE Loops and are drilled to depths between 175’ and 300’. The building heating and cooling loads, land availability and area geology determine the number and depth of the holes. Vertical Loops are the most common design and have day one optimal performance whereas horizontal loops require time for excavated dirt to settle back to 100% compaction. Proper tremie grouting of vertical bores ensures instant contact between the loop and the ground.

Thermally Enhanced Grouting

The most important part of any vertical loop field installation is proper grouting. The only approved method of grouting a vertical borehole is tremie grouting. The way it works is fairly simple, once the loop has been installed into the borehole, another hose must be run down to the bottom of the borehole. It is paramount that the tremie hose reach the bottom of the borehole before the grouting process begins. By pumping from the bottom of the hole up, you can be assured that water in the hole is completely displaced with environmentally safe, low permeability, bentonite grout. The grout provides a median of heat transfer between the loop pipe and the earth and most importantly protects any water bearing zones from possible intrusion of surface contaminants.

Loop Field Flushing and Purging

Island Geo Drillers is one of the few drilling contractors on Long Island with the ability to flush and purge any size geothermal loop field. We remove air and filter debris from the entire piping system and then mix any preferred antifreeze solution.

Fusion and Headering Services

Fusion joints are made by joining two molten pipe ends together under pressure. When done properly, joints made by fusion are stronger and more reliable than joint coupled pipe. IGD has the capability to join high density polyethylene pipe using all heat fusion techniques. Our team members are IGSHPA and manufacturer certified for all aspects of fusion.
